The Founders
My Story...
began about three decades ago when my father returned from one of his frequent trips across Africa and asked my mother if they could spend a romantic weekend together. My mother, rarely seeing my father, enthusiastically agreed. Thereafter, they agreed on a date.
It had been about two weeks after my father’s return, when my mother asked from one of the neighbours if they could care for me in their absence. The neighbours, being a Christian family home, agreed to the request.
Not long after, the date my parents had scheduled came about, and my mother took me by the hand and led me to the neighbours house. Leaving me in their care.
It was on a Thursday afternoon when my parents left for their romantic weekend. Friday came, then Saturday dawned, and before we knew it, the weekend was over. It was on a Monday evening, as the twilight of the sun settled-in, I stood on the roadside waiting for my parent’s return. But then, their presence never manifested. Monday passed, then Tuesday. We waited and waited but still my parents were no where to be seen.
To make a long story short, after about two weeks, as we watched the twilight settle over the horizon of the hills, the neighbours heard on the evening radio news that Isaac Ngabo, Margret Nakawala, and several others had perished in a road accident.
At the time, I was only six years old, too young to realise the weight of what had happened. And so, I continued living with the neighbours, as my heart longed for my parents’ return. As months turned to years, I found myself lost, void of words and purpose, uncertain of the future and what lay ahead.
As most kids in my situation would have done, I ran away in search of my parents. For the days that followed, I would be tested like a crucible of fire, my struggles would later define purpose. For days and nights, I went without food nor shelter. I became increasingly desperate and destitute until one day, I said to myself, Enough is enough!
Like the prodigal son, I found the courage to return home, to the family I had abandoned. The neighbours with whom my parents had entrusted, welcomed me back, and in them I found once more love and home-embrace.
As the years passed, I realised that I could not change my past, but I could shape my future. So, I forgave myself for the sins I had not committed, nor the pain I could not control. I let go the bitterness and found a path toward the future I could control.
I knew then, had I remained married to my orthodox, had I not had let go my sorrows, my past-pain and circumstances, I would have spent the rest of my life envying the success other men had build.
So, I channeled my energy into learning. I started first grade at the age of sixteen. Through all the struggles, the mediocrity, and the hardship, I made it through high school. My thirst for learning didn’t stop with high-school. With the support of the late Bishop John Osmers, I continued my education until I earned my first degree in accountancy.
Still, I did not stop, I continued until I gained my second degree MBA in Finance and Accounting. I worked harder than anyone in my circle, until I got any opportunity to relocate to the United Kingdom.
As I later wrote my first book, I realised, in all we do, life is life, you can’t change it, but you can deal with it; as it comes and not as goes. No matter what you do, problems will always be problems, circumstances never end. And so, you deal with them not by dwelling on the past, but by focusing on the future.
Understand, in order to thrive, you must first learn how to survive. Once I had realised this vital lesson, I came to this profound conclusion: Life is not a puzzle to be solved, but a question to be answered. When the time comes and death approaches, who will remember you? What will they remember you for?
Ask yourself, whom are you toiling for? Is it worth it?
